General Description

This position is responsible for the development, establishment and oversight/monitoring of the operational risk framework of Popular in its various components (e.g. risk and control self-assessments, outsourcing risk management, business continuity/disaster recovery, key risk indicators, operational and potential losses). This position will support mainly the operational risk management process and propose to minimize operational risks from evaluation of key risks indications, risk and controls self-assessments and operational losses. This position will report to Operational Risk supervisor.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist business units in performing risk analyses of their different processes and the identification of key risks and controls, as well as action plans to address any gaps and in the mitigating measures identified.
  • Schedule and conduct risk and controls self-assessments training and planning sessions.
  • Monitor the completion of risk and controls self-assessments by business units.
  • Provide business and technical advice and consultation to operational and business units, on risk assessments and other operational risks and controls.
  • Monitor adequacy of and compliance with mitigation and remediation plans adopted by the operational and business units.
  • Review the established policies, standards and guidelines to incorporate new guidelines and best practices used to assess the operational risks.
  • Provide business and technical advice on risk assessment and management issues.
  • Perform root cause analyses on identified risk events to recommend improvements to prevent these risk events from re-occurring in future.
  • Assist the risk coordinators in other Popular units with the identification of key risk indicators in their business units.
  • Analyze trends in the key risk indicators.
  • Analyzes data, including operational losses data, to calculate risks and outcomes.  Evaluates, in coordination with business units’ additional mitigation strategies and actions that need to be taken.


Bachelor’s Degree of Business administration, Accounting, Finance or Industrial Engineer.


At least 3-5 years of experience in operational management, internal or external audit, or other risk management functions within a financial institution; all strong pluses. Must be bilingual (English and Spanish) and be able to speak and write both languages fluently.

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Risk Management concepts and methodologies.
  • Must be highly proficient with Microsoft Power Point, Excel, and Visio.
  • Must be flexible and able to balance several priorities at once
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Demonstrated abilities in end-to-end process flow development, identification and documentation of operational risks and controls, and controls testing
  • Experience with developing or monitoring key risk indicator (KRIs) metrics.
  • Ability to build relationships with people at all levels.
  • Ability to present and interact with all levels of management including executive leadership
  • Experience in accounting, audit, and/or professional services is desired.
  • Understand and abide by business ethical standards
  • Strong business writing and verbal communication (and presentation) skills; in both Spanish and English
