General Description

Compliance Officer will work with the AML Officers and the Program Office (PO) Manager, defines the FCC related minimum requirements for policies, procedures, programs and manuals for all Popular Inc. banking subsidiaries and affiliates. These definitions include, but are not limited to, minimum requirements for the following processes: Customer Onboarding, Periodic Reviews, Sanctions, and Transaction Monitoring.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Defines in coordination with the Risk Management group, related Risk Appetite statement that is included in the Group’s Anti-Money Laundering (AML) and Counter Terrorism Finance (CTF), and Sanctions policies;
  • In coordination with the AML officers for Banco Popular de Puerto Rico (BPPR) and Popular Bank (The AML Officers) and the Global Sanctions Officer, leads the annual process to review and enhance the groups’ AML/CTF and Sanctions policies;
  • In coordination with the PO Projects team, ensures that all relevant policies and procedures impacted by streamlining and efficiency initiatives are timely modified and enacted upon;
  • Acts as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) in providing guidance to the AML officers and the Global Sanctions Officer in defining the Group’s subsidiaries and affiliates relevant AML/CTF and Sanctions procedures;
  • Acts as the ultimate SME in providing counsel to the lines of business representatives and BSA liaisons in the interpretation of policy principles and procedure requirements;
  • Based on results from the annual Enterprise Wide Risk Assessment (EWRA) and in coordination with the EWRA Senior Compliance Officer, recommends changes to existing FCC related policies and procedures;
  • In collaboration with the FCC Training and Communications Compliance Officer identifies opportunities for enhancements and or design existing training courses and contents;
  • Maintains an updated inventory of all relevant FCC related policies and procedures; and
  • Responds to new regulatory guidance and or inquiries as needed.


Bachelor’s Degree from a four-year college or university in the fields of Economics or Law. 

Certifications: Anti-Money Laundering Specialist Certification (CAMS), preferable.


10+ years of experience working for a financial institution in one or more of the following fields: AML/BSA, Enterprise Risk Management, Operational Risk, Regulatory Compliance or Auditing.

  • High degree of commitment, ability to adapt to new situations and work under pressure.
  • Research and analytical skills.
  • Attention to detail with excellent time management and multitasking abilities.
  • Skills to manage projects independently, develop and maintain good interpersonal relationships, anticipate needs, present alternatives to solve situations and provide continuity and follow-up on matters.
  • Knowledge of the following programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
